Lucas Oil is a high-viscosity oil additive designed for air-cooled small engines (lawn mowers, trimmers, tractors) and equipment. It reduces engine wear, lowers operating temperatures, and extends oil life in both 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines.
Fitment & Compatibility
- Engine type: Works with any 4-stroke or 2-stroke lawn mower engine (push mowers, riding mowers, zero-turns). Not for electric mowers.
- Oil type: Mix with standard SAE 30, 10W-30, or 2-stroke oil. Do not use in engines requiring synthetic-only oil unless specified by the manufacturer.
- Volume: Use 1 oz per quart of oil (or 4 oz per gallon). Check your engineβs oil capacity (typically 15β20 oz for push mowers, 1β2 quarts for riders).
- OEM vs aftermarket: Aftermarket additive; no OEM restrictions. Compatible with all brands (Briggs & Stratton, Honda, Kohler, Kawasaki, Tecumseh).
- Check before buying: Confirm your engine is air-cooled and not a closed-loop hydraulic system. Verify your oil type is conventional or semi-synthetic (not full synthetic unless additive is labeled for it).
Key Things to Know
- Quality: Lucas is a trusted brand in automotive and small engine lubricants. This additive reduces friction and sludge buildup, especially in older engines.
- Installation difficulty: Easy β just pour directly into the oil fill tube after warming the engine. No special tools needed.
- Common gotchas: Overuse can cause foaming or oil seal leaks. Stick to the 1 oz per quart ratio. Do not use in engines with wet clutches (some zero-turn hydros).
- Performance note: Best for high-temperature or heavy-load mowing. Not necessary for light-duty, occasional use.
Should You Buy It
Buy this if you have an older or heavily used mower that runs hot, smokes, or shows wear. Itβs a cheap, low-risk way to reduce engine noise and extend oil life. Skip it if your engine is new, runs synthetic oil, or you only mow a small lawn once a month.
