Lucas Oil is a high-viscosity, petroleum-based oil additive designed to reduce friction, heat, and wear in small engines (lawn mowers, tractors, trimmers). It’s not a standalone oil—it’s mixed with existing engine oil to improve lubrication, especially in older or high-mileage engines.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, check your engine’s oil type (SAE 30, 10W-30, etc.) and capacity—Lucas Oil blends at a 1:1 ratio with standard engine oil (e.g., 20 oz Lucas + 20 oz oil for a 40 oz system). Works with most 4-stroke lawn mower engines (Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Honda, Kawasaki). Not for 2-stroke mix or hydrostatic transmissions. Verify your mower’s oil fill cap is accessible for adding the additive; no special tools needed.
Key Things to Know
- Viscosity boost: Thickens oil noticeably—may cause hard starting in cold weather (below 40°F). Consider only in warmer months.
- No pour spout: Bottle has a simple screw cap; use a funnel to avoid spills.
- Installation: Easy—pour into crankcase after draining old oil, then add new oil. No mixing required.
- Common gotcha: Overfilling is easy—measure your engine’s total oil capacity first. Use a ratio of 1 part Lucas to 1 part oil, not more.
Should You Buy It
Buy this if you have an older mower with worn rings or noisy valves, or you run it hard in hot weather. It’s cheap and effective for extending engine life, but skip it for new engines or cold-weather use—stick with straight 10W-30 instead.
