This is a 40-inch-wide plug aerator designed to be towed behind a tractor, ATV, or UTV. It uses 10-inch pneumatic tires and a 100-pound weight tray to punch cores into lawns, gardens, or farm fields for improved soil aeration.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, check these three things:
- Hitch type: Universal hitch fits 1-7/8" or 2" receiver hitches. Ensure your machine has a standard trailer or ATV hitch—not a lawn mower’s rear hitch plate (most zero-turns and ride-ons won’t work without an adapter).
- Tow capacity: Your towing vehicle must handle at least 150 pounds (aerator + weight tray). Most ATVs and compact tractors do, but small riding mowers may struggle on hills.
- Width clearance: 40-inch width requires at least 42 inches of clearance between obstacles (gates, trees, fences). Measure your yard’s narrowest paths.
This is an aftermarket accessory; no OEM-specific fitment needed for most tractors or ATVs with a standard receiver hitch.
Key Things to Know
- Assembly required: You’ll need wrenches and about 1-2 hours. The weight tray and tine drums bolt together—no welding needed.
- Weight tray is critical: The 100-pound tray (not including weights) is empty. You’ll need to add sand, concrete blocks, or steel plates for effective plugging. Without extra weight, the tines may skip on hard soil.
- Tine quality: Stock tines are basic steel. For heavy clay or rocky soil, plan to replace them with hardened tines after a season.
- Pneumatic tires: 10-inch tires provide smooth rolling but can go flat. Check pressure before each use—low pressure causes uneven plugging.
Should You Buy It
If you have a tractor or ATV with a standard receiver hitch and need to aerate large lawns or fields (over 0.5 acre), this is a budget-friendly option. It’s not ideal for small yards, tight spaces, or rocky soil without adding weight and upgrading tines. For occasional use on soft to moderate soil, it’s a solid value.
