What It Is

This is a 2.7mm (.105 inch) diameter, 1-pound spool of Stihl X-line trimmer line, designed for heavy-duty trimming in commercial-grade and high-end residential Stihl trimmers. It’s a square-profile line for cutting thick grass, weeds, and light brush.

Fitment & Compatibility

  • Check your trimmer’s line diameter rating – this 2.7mm line is for Stihl trimmers that accept 2.4–3.0mm line. Do not use in trimmers rated for smaller diameters (e.g., 2.0mm or 2.4mm max) as it can overload the head or damage the engine.
  • OEM vs aftermarket – This is genuine Stihl line, so it’s guaranteed to fit Stihl’s AutoCut, PolyCut, and SuperCut heads. It may also work in third-party heads that accept .105 inch line, but check head compatibility.
  • Spool size – The 1lb spool fits most standard bump-feed and fixed-line heads. For heads that use pre-cut pieces, you’ll need to cut lengths yourself (typically 12–15 inches per side).
  • Not for electric/battery trimmers – Almost all battery-powered trimmers use thinner line (1.6–2.0mm). This is for gas-powered Stihl models only.

Key Things to Know

  • Square profile cuts better than round – The X-line’s four edges slice through thick vegetation faster than round line, but it wears faster on hard surfaces (concrete, stone).
  • Installation is straightforward – Feed through the head eyelets or wind onto a spool. No special tools needed, but make sure to follow head-specific winding instructions to avoid jamming.
  • Common gotcha – If your trimmer has a speed-feed head (e.g., Stihl AutoCut 25-2), you must load the line in the correct direction (usually clockwise). Loading backward causes the line to lock and not feed.
  • Noise and debris – This line is heavier, so it throws more debris. Wear eye and leg protection, and avoid trimming near windows or cars.

Should You Buy It

Buy this if you own a gas-powered Stihl trimmer (FS 55, FS 70, FS 90, FS 94, FS 111, etc.) and regularly cut thick weeds, brambles, or overgrown grass. It’s overkill for light lawn edging or occasional use on thin grass – a 2.0mm or 2.4mm line will be more economical and easier on the trimmer head. For commercial landscapers or heavy home use, this spool offers good value per foot.
