What It Is

The Stens 280-578 is a flat idler pulley designed to guide and tension the mower deck belt on Toro and Wheel Horse lawn tractors. It replaces OEM part 92-7101 and is used on 42-inch to 60-inch decks, primarily on older commercial and residential models.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, verify three things:

  • Deck size & model: Fits Toro Wheel Horse 520, 521, 522, 523, 524, 525, 526, 527, 528, and 530 series, plus some Toro Groundsmaster and Z-Master models. Also compatible with Toro 92-7101 OEM.
  • Bearing & shaft: The idler uses a 6202-2RS sealed ball bearing with a 15mm bore. Measure your existing idler’s shaft diameter—if it’s 5/8 inch (15.875mm), this won’t fit. The Stens unit is 1.5 inches outer diameter.
  • Belt width: Designed for 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch belts. Check your belt width and deck diagram to confirm it’s a flat idler (not a V-groove pulley).

If your deck uses a pressed-steel idler with a 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch bore, this won’t work—this is a bearing-based idler.

Key Things to Know

  • Quality: Stens is a reputable aftermarket brand; this idler is made with a sealed bearing and zinc-plated steel. Expect comparable lifespan to OEM (2-3 seasons with normal use).
  • Installation difficulty: Easy—remove one bolt, swap the pulley, and re-tighten. No special tools needed. Torque to 20-25 ft-lbs.
  • Common gotchas: The bearing may feel slightly rough out of the box—spin it by hand; a little resistance is normal, but grinding means a defect. Also, the flat face can wear unevenly if your belt is misaligned—check belt routing before installing.
  • Noise: Some users report a slight bearing whine for the first hour; it usually quiets down.

Should You Buy It

If you have a Toro or Wheel Horse with a 15mm shaft and a flat idler that’s worn or noisy, this is a solid, cost-effective replacement—about half the price of OEM. Avoid it if your deck uses a different bearing size or a grooved idler. For most DIY owners, it’s a straightforward fix that restores belt tension and reduces vibration.
