What It Is

This is a digital tachometer that measures RPM on small engines via an inductive pickup (clips around a spark plug wire). It’s designed for chainsaws, lawn mowers, marine outboards, motorcycles, and diesel engines—anywhere you need to set idle speed or verify governor adjustments.

Fitment & Compatibility

  • Engine type: Works with spark-ignited gasoline engines. Not for diesel (no spark plug wire). Check that your engine has a spark plug lead at least 2mm thick for the clip to grip.
  • Wiring: Requires 12V DC power (connects to battery or ignition coil positive). Some mower engines (e.g., older Briggs & Stratton without battery) may need a separate 12V source.
  • Mounting: Includes a clip for temporary use; permanent installation needs zip ties or adhesive (not included). The display is small (about 1.5” x 1”), so ensure you have a flat, visible spot on the machine.
  • Brand/model: No OEM-specific fit. Works on any single-cylinder engine with a spark plug wire. Not for multi-cylinder engines without a dedicated wire per cylinder.

Key Things to Know

  • Setup: Must enter the engine’s number of pulses per revolution (usually 1 for single-cylinder, 0.5 for twin). Wrong setting = false reading. Default is for single-cylinder.
  • Installation: Clip must face the spark plug boot (not the wire end) and be within 6 inches of the plug. Too far away = no signal.
  • Durability: Not waterproof. Keep dry or remove after use. The clip is plastic and can crack if overtightened.
  • Accuracy: ±1% typical. Fine for setting idle/speed, but not for precision tuning. Battery life is several months with typical use.

Should You Buy It

Buy this if you need a cheap, portable RPM gauge for setting idle or max speed on a single-cylinder small engine (lawn mower, chainsaw, outboard) and don’t need a permanent, weatherproof mount. Skip it if you require multi-cylinder support, waterproofing, or a more rugged unit for daily commercial use.
