This is a set of three replacement spindle reinforcement rings and bolts designed to strengthen the mounting area where the mower blade spindle attaches to the deck. It’s intended for John Deere 42-inch stamped steel decks found on D100, D130, D140, D160, LA100, LA115, and LA120 series lawn tractors.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, verify your mower has a 42-inch stamped deck (not fabricated or 48-inch). Check the deck model number stamped on the deck shell—common codes are 42C or 42A. These rings fit the standard spindle bolt pattern (3-hole, 1/4-inch thick steel ring). They are aftermarket replacements for OEM part numbers JD GY20785 (ring) and JD GY21181 (bolt). Measure the existing spindle bolt hole diameter—should be 5/16-inch. If your deck has elongated or stripped holes, these rings will not fix that; they only reinforce undamaged holes.
Key Things to Know
- Quality: The rings are zinc-plated steel, not hardened, but adequate for residential use. Bolts are grade 5—fine for a homeowner but not for heavy commercial mowing.
- Installation: Moderate difficulty. You’ll need to remove the blade, spindle assembly, and old bolts. The ring goes on the top side of the deck, under the spindle housing. Use Loctite Blue on the bolts to prevent loosening.
- Common gotchas: Do not overtighten—torque to 25-30 ft-lbs. The rings are thin (about 1/8-inch), so they won’t fix a cracked deck. If your deck is already warped or has rust-through, these are a temporary band-aid.
- Set of 3: You get one ring and bolt per spindle (three spindles total). No extra hardware for the center spindle is included.
Should You Buy It
If your John Deere 42-inch deck has loose or wobbly spindles due to worn bolt holes, this kit is a cheap, effective fix for a homeowner. It’s not for commercial use or decks with structural damage. At $25.64 and with a 4.7-star rating, it’s a solid value if you’re handy with a socket set. Skip it if your deck is cracked or you need OEM-grade strength.
