The Oregon 22-855 Magnum Gatorline is a heavy-duty .155-inch square trimmer line, designed for commercial-grade brush clearing and thick weeds. It fits most gas and battery trimmers that accept a 3 lb. spool or bulk line, including EGO Power+ models.
Fitment & Compatibility
- Gauge: .155-inch (4 mm) – check your trimmer’s manual for max line diameter. Too thick may jam or damage the head.
- Spool: 3 lb. (251 feet) – ensure your trimmer head can hold a spool this size; some EGO models use a smaller spool or require winding from bulk.
- Trimmer Type: Works with EGO, Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo, Ryobi, and other trimmers with a standard bump-feed or fixed-line head. Not for electric trimmers with a thinner .080–.095 limit.
- OEM vs Aftermarket: Oregon is a top aftermarket brand – no fit issues on most trimmers, but verify your head’s line-retention method (e.g., hole size for insertion).
Before buying: Measure your existing line gauge with calipers. Confirm your trimmer head accepts square line (most do) and can handle 3 lbs. of line without overloading the head’s spring or feed mechanism.
Key Things to Know
- Durability: Square shape cuts thicker than round line; the “Gator” serrated edge grabs and shreds heavy brush, but wears faster on pavement – use only for vegetation.
- Installation: Moderate difficulty – 3 lbs. of line is heavy to wind manually. Use a drill-powered winder or take it slow to avoid tangles. Not pre-wound.
- Gotcha: The .155 gauge is aggressive – on lightweight trimmers, it can cause vibration or slow the head. Best for mid-to-high-power gas or battery trimmers (e.g., EGO 56V, Stihl FS 90+).
- Value: At ~$64, it’s cheaper per foot than most premium lines, but you need to use the whole spool – no partial return.
Should You Buy It
Buy this if you have a powerful trimmer (≥25cc gas or 56V battery) and regularly tackle thick weeds, blackberries, or saplings. Avoid it for light grass or if your trimmer limits line to .105 or smaller – you’ll risk jamming or poor performance.
