What It Is

This is an inductive tachometer that measures engine RPM and tracks total run hours. It’s designed for small engines (2-stroke and 4-stroke) on lawn mowers, generators, chainsaws, pressure washers, and other outdoor power equipment—no direct electrical connection needed, just clip the sensor around the spark plug wire.

Fitment & Compatibility

  • Engine type: Works with any spark-ignited small engine (gasoline, 2-stroke or 4-stroke). Not for diesel engines.
  • Spark plug wire: The inductive clip fits wires up to about 7mm diameter. Check your plug wire thickness—thick carbon-core wires may not read reliably.
  • Mounting: Comes with adhesive backing or a bracket. Ensure a clean, flat, dry surface on your mower deck or frame for secure attachment.
  • No model-specific lock: Fits any brand (Honda, Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Kawasaki, etc.) as long as engine is spark-ignited. No OEM-specific part needed.

Key Things to Know

  • Installation is easy: Clip the sensor around the spark plug wire (not the boot), secure the unit, and set the pulse mode (1/2/4 strokes). Most users do it in under 5 minutes.
  • Accuracy is decent for the price: Expect ±2-3% error at idle, and up to ±5% at high RPM. Good for tuning, not for precise lab work.
  • Backlight helps in low light: Useful for checking RPM in dim sheds or early morning.
  • Common gotcha: The hour meter only counts when the engine is running (senses spark). If you leave the unit on but the engine off, it won’t add hours—but the display may stay lit, draining the internal battery (CR2032) faster. Remove the battery if storing long-term.

Should You Buy It

Buy this if you tune small engines, want to track maintenance intervals by run hours, or need a quick RPM check without wiring. Skip it if you need lab-grade accuracy or a permanent dash-mounted gauge—a wired tachometer will be more reliable over time.
