What It Is

The GarveeLife 40 Inch Tow Behind Aerator is a pull-behind lawn tool designed to core-aerate your lawn by attaching to a garden tractor or riding mower. It’s best for medium-to-large lawns (up to about 2 acres) where you need to relieve soil compaction and improve water/air flow.

Fitment & Compatibility

  • Hitch type: Universal hitch pin (fits standard 5/8” or 3/4” hitch holes). Works with most lawn tractors, zero-turn mowers, and UTVs that have a 1-7/8” or 2” receiver or a simple clevis/pin setup.
  • Deck clearance: Check that your mower’s deck doesn’t block the aerator’s tongue when turning. Measure from the hitch point to the back of your mower deck – you need at least 12-15 inches of clearance for the aerator to pivot freely.
  • Weight/ballast: The aerator weighs about 90 lbs empty. For best penetration, you’ll need to add weight (sand, water, or concrete blocks) to the hopper – plan for up to 200 lbs total. Verify your tractor’s towing capacity (most lawn tractors handle 150-250 lbs easily).
  • No OEM equivalent – this is an aftermarket universal unit. Not compatible with zero-turn mowers that have a fixed, non-pivoting hitch without modification.

Key Things to Know

  • Assembly required: You’ll need basic tools (wrenches, socket set) and about 1-2 hours. Instructions are basic – expect to figure out some bolt alignment yourself.
  • Penetration depth: The “spikes” are more like shallow tines (about 1-2 inch depth) unless you add significant weight. Without ballast, it mainly scratches the surface on hard soil.
  • Transport wheels: They work, but they’re small and plastic. On bumpy terrain, they can bounce or drag. Not built for heavy-duty commercial use.
  • Hitch pin included: Yes, but it’s a cheap cotter-pin style. Upgrade to a locking hitch pin for safety, especially on slopes.

Should You Buy It

If you have a standard lawn tractor, a large lawn, and you’re on a tight budget, this aerator can get the job done with added weight. But if you want consistent deep coring or have a zero-turn mower, spend more on a heavier-duty model (like Agri-Fab or Yard Tuff) with better tines and a more robust frame.
