This set of four aftermarket mower deck wheels replaces the original gauge wheels on Cub Cadet riding mowers with 42-inch, 50-inch, or 54-inch stamped-steel decks. These wheels support the outer edges of the deck, preventing scalping on uneven terrain and reducing wear on the blade tips.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, verify three things:
- Deck size: Only confirmed for 42", 50", and 54" Cub Cadet decks. Not for 46" or 60" decks.
- Model series: Fits most Cub Cadet XT1, XT2, XT3, and LT series mowers with stamped decks. Does not fit fabricated (fab) decks or older pre-2000 models.
- OEM replacement: These aftermarket wheels replace OEM part numbers 983-04205-0637, 983-04205-0638, and 983-04205-0640. Compare your existing wheel’s diameter (typically 4.5") and axle hole size (usually 3/8") to these. Measure the axle bolt spacing on your deck—most use a 4-bolt pattern with 2.75" center-to-center spacing.
If your deck uses a single-bolt or keyed spindle design, these wheels won’t fit.
Key Things to Know
- Quality: Aftermarket plastic wheels are lighter than OEM steel or composite. They work fine for flat lawns but may crack faster if you hit curbs or rocks regularly.
- Installation: Simple bolt-on job—remove the old wheel and axle bolt, then attach the new wheel with the included hardware. No special tools needed.
- Common gotcha: The axle bolts on these aftermarket wheels are often slightly shorter than OEM. If your deck has thick mounting brackets, you may need to buy longer bolts separately.
- No grease fittings: These are sealed bearings. They won’t last as long as greasable OEM wheels, but they’re cheap to replace.
Should You Buy It
If you have a Cub Cadet with a 42", 50", or 54" stamped deck and just need functional, low-cost replacements for worn or broken gauge wheels, this set is a solid budget pick. It’s not for heavy-duty commercial use, and you’ll likely replace them sooner than OEM parts—but at this price, the trade-off is worth it for most homeowners.
