The Field Tuff 48" 3-Point Plug Aerator is a tow-behind attachment designed for Category 0 and 1 compact tractors. It uses 54 coring plugs to remove soil cores from lawns, relieving compaction and improving air, water, and nutrient flow—ideal for medium to large properties.
Fitment & Compatibility
- Hitch: Fits Category 0 and 1 three-point hitches (standard on most subcompact and compact tractors under 30 HP). Verify your tractor’s hitch category and pin size (typically 5/8" for Cat 0, 7/8" for Cat 1).
- Frame Width: 48" working width. Ensure your tractor’s rear tire spacing clears the frame (minimum 4-6" clearance on each side is recommended).
- Weight: Unit weight ~200 lbs empty; weight tray adds up to 300 lbs of ballast (not included). Check your tractor’s three-point lift capacity—most subcompacts handle 400-500 lbs, but confirm.
- Plug Depth: Coring plugs penetrate up to 3" deep. Avoid on rocky or heavily rooted soil to prevent plug damage.
Key Things to Know
- Assembly Required: Takes 1-2 hours with basic hand tools. Instructions are clear, but the weight tray and retractable feet mechanisms need careful alignment.
- Retractable Feet: These let you lift the aerator off the ground for transport without dismounting—useful for turning or moving between areas, but the locking pins can loosen over time; check before each use.
- Weight Tray: Essential for penetration in hard or dry soil. Fill with concrete blocks, sandbags, or steel plates (max 300 lbs). Without ballast, plugs may be shallow or skip.
- Durability: Steel frame is heavy-duty, but the coring plugs are hollow and can bend on rocks or roots. Inspect and replace bent plugs periodically (standard 1/2" x 3" plugs are widely available).
Should You Buy It
If you own a Category 0 or 1 compact tractor and need to aerate 1+ acres regularly, this is a solid, budget-friendly option. It’s not for rocky soil or tiny lawns, and you’ll need to supply your own weight. For lighter duty or smaller lots, a walk-behind aerator or spike model may be simpler.
