What It Is

This is an 8-inch brush cutter attachment designed to convert a string trimmer into a heavy-duty brush clearing tool. It’s intended for clearing thick weeds, small saplings, and overgrown brush on compatible straight-shaft trimmers.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, check these three things:

  • Shaft type: This attachment fits straight-shaft trimmers only. Curved-shaft models will not work.
  • Drive system: Requires a trimmer with a universal 7/16-inch hex shaft or a compatible Troy-Bilt/MTD split-boom system. Many Remington, Craftsman, Yard Machines, Yardman, Snapper, Bolens, Murray, Ryobi, Greenworks, and Kobalt straight-shaft trimmers use this standard, but verify your model’s shaft end.
  • Bolt pattern: The attachment uses a 4-bolt mounting flange. Measure the bolt spacing on your trimmer’s coupler; it must match the attachment’s pattern.
  • OEM vs. aftermarket: This is a Troy-Bilt branded part, but it’s not OEM for all listed brands. It’s a universal fit for the common 7/16” hex shaft system. Aftermarket equivalents exist but may have looser tolerances.

How to check: Remove your trimmer head. If the drive shaft is a 7/16-inch hex (about 11mm across the flats), and your coupler has four bolts, this will likely fit.

Key Things to Know

  • Not for heavy-duty clearing: The 8-inch blade is good for thick weeds and saplings up to about 1 inch thick. For larger brush, you need a larger (10-inch or 12-inch) blade.
  • Installation is moderate: You’ll need to remove the trimmer head and string spool, then bolt on the attachment. Expect 15–30 minutes. Tools required: a hex key and a wrench (usually 13mm or 15mm).
  • Use the right blade: The attachment comes with a steel brush blade. For more aggressive cutting, you can swap to a carbide-tipped blade (sold separately).
  • Common gotcha: If your trimmer has a safety clutch or a quick-release coupler, double-check that the attachment’s drive shaft is fully seated and locked. A loose fit can cause vibration or damage.

Should You Buy It

Buy this if you have a compatible straight-shaft trimmer and need to clear occasional brush or thick weeds without buying a dedicated brush cutter. It’s a solid budget-friendly upgrade for light-to-medium duty, but skip it if you need to tackle dense, woody growth larger than your thumb—you’ll want a heavier-duty blade or a separate brush cutter.
