This is an aftermarket carburetor designed to replace the OEM Briggs & Stratton 594492 or 27761152 on 500cc, 17.5hp single-cylinder engines. It’s used on riding mowers, lawn tractors, and some zero-turns from brands like Troy-Bilt, Craftsman, Husqvarna, and Murray.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, confirm these three things:
- Engine model: Your engine must be a Briggs & Stratton 500cc (17.5hp) with a 594492 or 27761152 OEM carb number. Check the engine model sticker (near the air filter or valve cover).
- Mounting flange: This carb uses a two-bolt flange. Measure the bolt spacing – it should be approximately 2.75 inches center-to-center. If your engine has a different pattern, it won’t fit.
- Gasket and linkage: The carb comes with a new gasket, but your old linkage (throttle, choke, and governor springs) may need to be transferred. The aftermarket carb often has slightly different lever angles, so expect to adjust the governor rod length.
Does not fit 550cc or 19hp engines, or any V-twin models.
Key Things to Know
- Quality varies: This is a budget aftermarket part. It often works out of the box, but some units have casting debris or a misadjusted float. Inspect the bowl for metal shavings before install.
- Installation difficulty: Moderate. You’ll need to remove the old carb, swap the fuel line, and reattach throttle/governor linkages. Plan 30-60 minutes. A manual or YouTube video helps.
- Common gotcha: The included gasket may be thinner than OEM. If you have a vacuum leak after install, double-gasket or use OEM gasket. Also, the choke plate may need a slight bend to close fully.
- Fuel compatibility: Use fresh, ethanol-free gas if possible. Ethanol can degrade the aftermarket rubber seals faster than OEM.
Should You Buy It
Buy this if your OEM carb is clogged, warped, or leaking and you want a low-cost fix for a mower that’s a few years old. It’s a solid value for the price, but expect to spend a little time tuning the linkages. If you need a perfect, drop-in replacement with zero fuss, stick with the OEM Briggs & Stratton part (usually $40-60).
