What It Is

This is a replacement spindle assembly for 42-inch cutting decks on select Cub Cadet, MTD, and Troy-Bilt lawn tractors. It drives the blade rotation and supports the blade pulley; commonly used on LTX1040, LTX1042, LTX1045, RZT-42, RZT-L42, RZT-S42, and LT2000 models.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, confirm three things:

  • Deck size: Only fits 42-inch decks. Measure your deck width if unsure.
  • Model number: Check your mower’s model tag (under seat or on frame) against the list above. This assembly also replaces OEM numbers 918-04822 and 918-04889.
  • Spindle shaft: It uses a 5/8-inch diameter shaft and 3-inch mounting bolt pattern. Measure your old spindle’s shaft diameter and bolt spacing to verify.

This is an aftermarket part, not OEM Cub Cadet/MTD. It should match factory dimensions but always compare to your old spindle.

Key Things to Know

  • Quality: Solid aftermarket build at a lower price than OEM. Bearings are sealed and pre-lubricated. Some users report shorter lifespan than OEM under heavy use.
  • Installation: Moderate difficulty. Requires removing blade, pulley, and deck. Use a torque wrench on the spindle pulley nut (typically 30-40 ft-lbs) and blade bolt (50-70 ft-lbs). Loctite recommended on blade bolts.
  • Gotcha: The 2-pack means you get two assemblies. If only one spindle is bad, you still have a spare. But verify your deck uses two spindles (most 42-inch decks do) before relying on this.
  • Check bearings: Spin the new spindle by hand before installing – it should rotate smoothly with no grinding. If rough, return it.

Should You Buy It

If you need to replace one or both spindles on a 42-inch Cub Cadet, MTD, or Troy-Bilt mower and want a cost-effective aftermarket option, this is a solid choice. It’s not for heavy commercial use, but for residential lawns, it offers reliable performance at half the OEM price.
