What It Is

This deck rebuild kit provides three complete spindle assemblies (P/N 618-06978 / 918-06978) and three high-lift blades (P/N 742-05056A / 942-05056) to replace worn or damaged cutting components on 54-inch residential zero-turn and lawn tractors from Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, and Craftsman. It’s designed for a full deck refresh—not just blade swaps—when spindles are noisy, leaking, or seized.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, verify these three things:

  • Deck size must be exactly 54 inches. This kit will not work on 46”, 50”, or 60” decks.
  • Compatible models: Cub Cadet RZT-L54, RZT-S54, XT1-54, ZT1-54; Troy-Bilt Mustang XP 54; Craftsman Z6900. Also fits some MTD-built 54” decks on Huskee, Yard-Man, and Bolens—check spindle bolt pattern (3-bolt, 4.5” center-to-center).
  • OEM vs aftermarket: These are aftermarket replacements for OEM part numbers 618-06978 (spindle) and 742-05056A (blade). The blades are 16.5” long, 2.5” wide, with a 1” center hole and 0.25” offset. Confirm your current blade length and hole size before ordering.

Tip: Measure the spindle housing height (typically ~3.5”) and pulley diameter (5.0”–5.5”) to match your deck. If your spindles use a different bearing or shaft length, this kit won’t fit.

Key Things to Know

  • Quality variance: At this price point, spindles may use standard-grade bearings rather than heavy-duty sealed units. Expect 2–3 seasons of residential use; commercial mowing will wear them faster.
  • Installation difficulty: Moderate. You’ll need a jack, socket set, and possibly a puller to remove old spindles. Plan 2–3 hours. Blades are pre-balanced, but check each one.
  • Common gotchas: The included blades are high-lift for better bagging—they’ll wear faster in sandy or dusty conditions. Also, the spindle bolts may be reverse-threaded on some models (left-hand on left side). Confirm before tightening.
  • No hardware included: You’ll need new lock washers and blade bolts (check your owner’s manual for torque specs—typically 70–90 ft-lbs).

Should You Buy It

Buy this kit if you have a 54” Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, or Craftsman with worn spindles (noise, wobble, or leaks) and want a cost-effective all-in-one refresh for residential mowing. Skip it if you need commercial-grade spindles, have a different deck size, or prefer OEM parts for warranty peace of mind.
