This is a 48-inch tow-behind plug aerator designed to relieve soil compaction in large lawns. It attaches to any machine with a standard 1-7/8-inch hitch ball—lawn tractors, ATVs, or UTVs—and uses 32 rust-proof knives to pull 3-inch deep soil cores.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, verify three things:
- Hitch type: Your tow vehicle must have a standard 1-7/8-inch trailer ball (included? check listing). Not compatible with pin-style hitches.
- Towing capacity: Your machine must be able to pull 200+ lbs when fully loaded with weight plates (plates not included). Most lawn tractors with 18+ HP will handle it, but check your owner’s manual for tow rating.
- Deck clearance: Measure from the back of your mower deck to the ground. The aerator tongue is 18 inches long, so you need at least 12 inches of clearance between the hitch and the deck to avoid contact during turns.
This is an aftermarket universal tool—no OEM brand-specific fitment. Works with John Deere, Husqvarna, Cub Cadet, Craftsman, and similar tractors, but not with zero-turn mowers lacking a hitch receiver.
Key Things to Know
- Weight plates are required: The aerator comes empty. You must add weight (typically 2–4 standard 40 lb. barbell plates or sandbags) to force the knives deep. Without weight, the unit will skip on hard soil.
- Assembly time: Expect 45–60 minutes. Tools needed: socket set, wrenches, and a torque wrench for the wheel lug nuts. Instructions are basic—watch a YouTube video for the assembly sequence.
- Knife depth adjustment: The tines are fixed at 3 inches. No depth control. On rocky or root-filled soil, knives can bend or snap—check your lawn for hidden obstacles first.
- Turning radius: At 48 inches wide, tight turns will leave uncored strips. Plan to overlap passes by 6–12 inches for full coverage.
Should You Buy It
Buy this if you have a large (1+ acre) lawn with compacted clay soil and a lawn tractor or ATV with a standard trailer hitch. It’s a budget-friendly plug aerator that works, but you’ll need to add weight, assemble it yourself, and accept that it won’t handle small, obstacle-heavy yards or rocky terrain well. Skip it if you want depth adjustment or a ready-to-use unit.
