This tow-behind plug aerator uses 11 steel star wheels to pull 2-inch deep cores of soil, designed for use with lawn tractors (up to 20 HP) and ATVs on medium-to-large lawns (½ acre+). It’s a mechanical aeration tool, not a spike or slice model, meant to relieve soil compaction and improve water/nutrient penetration.
Fitment & Compatibility
Check three things before buying:
- Hitch type: Requires a standard 1-7/8-inch coupler (most lawn tractors and ATVs have this). Measure your hitch ball—if it’s 2-inch, you’ll need an adapter.
- Towing capacity: Your machine must handle the unit’s weight (approx. 110 lbs empty, plus up to 150 lbs in the weight tray). Most lawn tractors with 18+ HP and ATVs with 300+ cc engines are fine, but verify your owner’s manual for tow limits.
- Deck clearance: The aerator is 40 inches wide. Ensure your machine’s rear tires are spaced at least 40 inches apart or use offset hitch pins (not included) to avoid tire overlap. Measure from the outside of your rear tires—if under 36 inches, this unit may not track straight.
No OEM-specific fit—this is a universal aftermarket model. No brand restrictions.
Key Things to Know
- Weight tray is essential: Without adding weight (sandbags, concrete blocks, or included tray fillers), the 2-inch depth is unreliable on hard or dry soil. Plan to load 100–150 lbs for consistent plugs.
- Assembly required: Expect 30–60 minutes with basic hand tools (wrenches, pliers). The star wheels come unassembled; check that all bolts are tight before first use.
- Pull at low speed: Towing faster than 3–4 mph causes the tines to skip or bounce, leaving shallow, uneven holes. Use the tractor’s lowest gear.
- Steel star wheels wear over time: After 5–10 acres, tips may dull. Replacement wheels are available separately (not included). Avoid rocky or root-heavy soil to extend life.
Should You Buy It
Buy this if you have a ½-acre+ lawn, a compatible tractor or ATV, and need deep core aeration on a budget—it’s a solid value for the price. Skip it if your soil is consistently wet, rocky, or if you prefer zero assembly; a rental aerator or spike model may suit you better.
